Vermont
Large Animal Clinic was founded in 2001 and is located in Milton, Vermont. The Hospital supports
the ambulatory practice that has grown to 6 full time veterinarians.
The ambulatory practice covers the geographic area of Northwestern
Vermont and Northeast New York. The ambulatory practice is focused on performance horses,
reproduction, dentistry, preventative medicine, and general equine
medicine and surgery.
The hospital consists of a surgical room and accompanying recovery
room that is used for orthopedic and general equine surgical cases.
Lacerations, orthopedic surgery, laser surgery, dental surgery, and
a wide range of soft tissue surgery including colic surgery are
performed routinely. There is 1 large treatment area that include
stocks for outpatient visits and in house standing procedures. The
hospital has a total of 8 stalls in the main equine barn and 1
isolation stall that is used to treat horses with contagious
diseases such as equine colitis, strangles, and others. The patients
are cared for by the technicians in the hospital and overnight
patient monitoring is available for medical treatment of colic's.
Lameness diagnosis and treatment is a primary focus of the practice.
Radiography is performed in the hospital or in the field with one of
2 portable digital X-ray machines. Large numbers of
radiographs are taken annually in conjunction with ultrasound,
diagnostic nerve blocks and physical exams to handle the lameness
case load.
Video endoscopy is available for the evaluation of upper airways of
performance horses and airway abnormalities in the general
population. Endoscopy of the stomach is also routinely performed at
our facility or in the field for the diagnosis and treatment of gastric ulcers, a common ailment
that affects many horses.
The clinic also offers equine chiropractic services.
