Philip D. van Harreveld, DVM, MS

Dr. van Harreveld graduated from North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1996.  In 1997, Dr. Phil completed a one year internship in Equine Medicine and Surgery at Kansas State University. In 2000, he completed an equine surgery residency at Kansas State University. In 2001, Dr. Phil was certified by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in equine surgery.  During his surgical residency, Dr. Phil received a Masters Degree in Veterinary Clinical Sciences from Kansas State University for research work in the field of equine joint and bone biomechanics. Dr. Phil's special interests include lameness examination, soft tissue and reproductive surgery, and the management of medical and surgical equine colic.

William Valentino, DVM, MS

Board Certified in Equine Surgery

 
Dr. Valentino joins VLAC Equine Hospital as an owner and Equine Surgery Specialist. Dr. Valentino brings with him six years of experience as a surgeon and orthopedic specialist for New York Equine Hospital at Belmont and Aqueduct Racetracks in New York. Dr. Valentino graduated from the University Of Georgia College Of Veterinary Medicine in 1994. After graduation, he completed an internship in Equine Anesthesia and Surgery at the University of Georgia.  Following his internship Dr. Valentino completed both a Masters Program and a residency in Equine Surgery at Kansas State College of Veterinary Medicine. Additionally, Dr. Valentino spent two years as a clinical instructor in Large Animal Surgery at Texas A&M University. His special interests include equine orthopedic imaging, arthroscopy, lameness evaluations and orthopedic surgery, including fracture repair.

Lorie Valentino, DVM, MS

Board Certified in Equine Internal Medicine


Dr. Valentino graduated from Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine.  She completed her residency and Masters Program in Equine Internal Medicine at the University of Missouri after a private practice Internship with Equine Medical Associates in St. Louis, MO. Dr. Valentino is board certified in Equine Internal Medicine.  Following her residency, Dr. Valentino was an associate for a Wisconsin private practice referral hospital for a year and then spent a year at Texas A&M as a clinical instructor of Equine Internal Medicine. She also practiced for two years as an associate at Running ‘S’ Equine, a private practice referral hospital, in New Jersey, and for 3 years at New York Equine Hospital at Belmont and Aqueduct Racetracks in New York. Her special interests include neonatal care, neurological diseases, Cushing's and Equine Metabolic disease and respiratory problems in horses. Dr. Lorie brings much needed expertise in Equine Internal Medicine to the region.

Kathy Murphy, DVM

Equine Acupuncture and Mesotherapy


Dr Kathy Murphy graduated with a DVM degree from Tuskegee University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2004. In 2005 she completed a surgery, medicine, and reproduction internship at Performance Equine Associates in Whitesboro, Texas. After completing her internship, Dr. Murphy spent a year at Newmarket Equine Clinic in Virginia where her work focused on hunter/jumpers, fox hunters and working the Standardbred race season at Colonial Downs Racetrack. She then joined New York Equine Associates on Long Island, NY centering on show horses. Dr Murphy is a graduate of the Chi Institute in Reddick, Florida where she studied traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture techniques in Horses, and has also completed her advanced training there. Her special interests include the diagnosis and treatment of lameness, sports medicine, and acupuncture.

Kristen Clapp, DVM


Dr. Clapp recently graduated from the Atlantic Veterinary College at the University of Prince Edward Island in May of 2011. Dr. Kristen completed her undergraduate work in Southern NH in 2004 where she worked as a histology and serology technician in their veterinary diagnostic laboratory. Prior to attending veterinary school she moved to Massachusetts. Dr. Kristen worked as a research technologist in the Division of Comparative Medicine at MIT while also continuing her education at Harvard University for three years. During veterinary school Dr. Kristen became very involved in AVC’s student run clubs by serving as president for both the Equine club and Theriogenology club. Having a strong interest in the equine sector of veterinary medicine Dr. Kristen was chosen to work with the veterinary team as a student member at the 2010 FEI Alltech World Equestrian Games. Dr. Kristen is excited to be living in Northern Vermont this year. When she is not at the clinic she enjoys spending time in the outdoors hiking, skiing and rock climbing with her husband and her two dogs.

Shelley Chmielewski

Office Manager

Shelley grew up on Nantucket Island. Always a true horse lover and proud owner of my Pinto “Mayflower”. Shelly owned a flower shop on Nantucket for many years with her mother. She moved to Vermont in 1991 with her husband and two children. Employed as Office Manager here at the clinic. She is the proud “Nana” of two grandchildren Emily and Lucas. The absolute loves of her life. She enjoys her family, her job, her home and yard.

Rachel Quinn

Rachel grew up in North Ferrisburgh and was active in the Charlotte Pony Club for many years. She graduated from SUNY Cobleskill with an AAS in Equine Studies in 2009. Rachel brings a wide array of horse experience from having been an owner, leaser, barn manager and professional A-Circuit groom.

Rachel Garbolino

Rachel is a current student at UVM and will be graduating in 2012 with a Bachelors of Animal Science. She has grown up riding horses for pleasure and on Monmouth Racetrack in New Jersey. Rachel plans to attend veterinary school in August of 2012 where she will focus on either equine or conservation medicine.
